Which type of wool should I choose? The pros and cons of wool blankets
"Which type of wool should I choose?" We often receive this question, and therefore here is a compact explanation of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of wool.
To start with a few general characteristics of wool:
- All wool blankets are very durable. They not only last a long time, but wool is inherently a natural, renewable material.
- Colorfast. Wool is a material that holds color well, which means it does not fade.
- Wool is timeless. We often hear: "Oh, we had such a blanket at home too." But of course there are more and more new designs alongside the traditional patterns.
- Wool is easy to maintain. 'Wool cleans itself' well, not entirely of course, but this statement comes from the fact that wool does not hold dirt.Nowadays, many blankets can be washed on a wool program with wool detergent (be sure to check the washing instructions), but we are still a bit old-fashioned... Just air them outside or, if it snows again: take the blanket outside into the snow, shake it out, let it dry naturally (not near a heat source), and you will have a wonderfully fresh blanket again. This is how our grandparents did it with wool products.
- And perhaps the most important general characteristic of wool... delightfully warm...
In terms of type of wool, we would like to advise you:
- 100% new wool with Tartan or Herringbone pattern: the real blankets as you may still remember from your grandmother. Often slightly thicker and initially a bit stiffer. Favorable pricing.
- 100% new wool, other: These are mostly blankets with a more modern design, and they are loosely woven, flexible, and soft, with a favorable price point.
- Recycled wool: Extra durable because these blankets are made from old blankets that are completely rewoven together with a portion of new materials into new blankets. Characteristic is a high density (feels a bit like felt), initially it feels a bit stiff but that quickly disappears and then the blanket feels soft.
- Lambswool (Shetland & Merino): these blankets are often more expensive, but in return, you get an extra thin blanket that feels wonderfully soft.
