Storing whisky in a decanter – Do’s & Don’ts

Do’s

Use a carafe with an airtight stopper

Always choose a decanter with a good closure. A real crystal stopper that fits well keeps your whisky flavorful for a longer time.

Store the carafe at room temperature

A constant temperature is key. Do not place your carafe on the windowsill in the sun or next to the heater. Whisky does not like tropical years.

Put it out of the sun

UV light can affect the color and flavor of whisky. So choose a shaded spot. Dark cabinets are your friend, sunlight is not.

Make sure to clean the carafe thoroughly before use.

Rinse with warm water (no soap!) and let dry thoroughly. Residues of cleaning agents? They prefer not to drink whisky.

Use it for bottled whisky, not for homemade adventures.

A decanter is intended for whisky that you have legally purchased. If you are distilling at home, a different type of storage is advisable – and probably also a lawyer.

Don’ts

Let whisky sit in a decanter for years.

A carafe is not a substitute for a bottle with an original closure. After a few months, you will taste oxidation. Use it for show & serving – not for long-term storage.

Use carafes with rubber or porous stoppers.

These can leak aromas or even emit odors. Poor plan. Crystal or glass stoppers are the better choice.

Mix different whiskies

That may seem clever (“I still had a little left over…”), but you end up with a blend without a story – and probably without balance.

Store whisky in a decanter if you value the label.

A decanter is beautiful, but once you throw away the bottle, after three sips you won't remember if it was a 12 or an 18-year-old. Tip: discreetly stick a label under the decanter. No one needs to know.

Shake the carafe (yes, really)

Whisky is not a cocktail. A gentle swirl is allowed, but shaking is a waste of the craftsmanship in your glass.

Storing whisky in a decanter – Do’s & Don’ts

Whisky decanters are beautiful. They add style to your sideboard, bar, or desk (for those who want to work in style). But there are a few things to keep in mind when you want to decant your liquid gold. Below are the do’s and don’ts for storing whisky in a decanter:

✅ Do’s:

✔ Use a decanter with an airtight stopper

Always choose a decanter with a good seal. A real crystal stopper that fits well keeps your whisky tasting better for longer.

✔ Store the decanter at room temperature

A constant temperature is key. Do not place your decanter on the windowsill in the sun or next to the heater. Whisky does not like tropical years.

✔ Keep it out of the sun

UV light can affect both the color and flavor of whisky. So choose a shaded spot. Dark cabinets are your friend, sunlight is not.

✔ Clean the decanter thoroughly before use

Rinse with warm water (no soap!) and let it dry completely. Residues of cleaning agents? They prefer not to drink whisky.

✔ Use it for bottled whisky, not for homemade adventures

A decanter is intended for whisky that you have legally purchased. If you are distilling at home, a different type of storage is recommended – and probably also a lawyer.

❌ Don’ts:

✘ Do not leave whisky in a decanter for years

A decanter is not a substitute for a bottle with an original closure. After a few months, you will start to taste oxidation. Use it for show & serving – not for long-term storage.

✘ Do not use decanters with rubber or porous stoppers

These can leak aromas or even emit odors. Bad plan. Crystal or glass stoppers are the better choice.

✘ Mix different whiskies

That may seem clever (“I had a little left over…”), but you end up with a blend without a story – and probably without balance.

✘ Store whisky in a decanter if you care about the label

A decanter is beautiful, but once you throw away the bottle, after three sips you won't remember if it was a 12 or an 18-year-old. Tip: discreetly stick a label under the decanter. No one needs to know.

✘ Shake the decanter (yes, really)

Whisky is not a cocktail. A gentle swirl is fine, but shaking is a waste of the craftsmanship in your glass.
